About Bowtie Master: Bowtie Diagram Software Built by Process Safety Engineers

Bowtie Master is cloud-based bowtie diagram software that helps organisations visualise, assess and communicate operational risk. Developed by Salus Technical, a team of process safety engineers based in Scotland, Bowtie Master turns complex risk data into clear, shareable bowtie diagrams that teams across your organisation can understand and act on.

Whether you manage risk in oil and gas, aerospace, marine, utilities, mining or rail, Bowtie Master gives you a structured, visual method to identify threats, map controls and track barrier health. Everything runs in your browser, with nothing to install.

Why We Built Bowtie Master

Bowtie Master was born from hands-on experience. Our founder, David Jamieson, spent years working as a process safety engineer helping organisations in high-hazard industries understand and manage the risks of major accidents. He saw the same problem everywhere: powerful risk analysis locked inside static documents that nobody outside the safety team could easily interpret.

The bowtie methodology solves that problem. It turns risk into a picture. But existing tools were either too complex, too expensive or too rigid. So we built Bowtie Master: a simple, cloud-based platform that makes it easy to create, store, share and update bowtie diagrams without specialist training.

Today, Bowtie Master is used by organisations across aerospace, oil and gas, marine, utilities, mining, cyber security, and transport. From multinational operators to independent consultancies, our customers trust the platform because it was built by people who understand the work. We remain a small, focused team, and every customer still gets direct access to the engineers who built the product.

What Makes Bowtie Master Different

Built by engineers, not just developers. Unlike generic risk platforms, Bowtie Master was designed by process safety professionals who use bowtie methodology daily. That means every feature, from barrier management to Excel data import, reflects how safety teams actually work.

Simple enough for non-specialists. Bowtie diagrams should be accessible to operations, leadership and frontline staff, not just the safety department. Bowtie Master is designed so that anyone in your organisation can read, understand and contribute to a bowtie assessment.

Cloud-based, no installation required. Access your bowtie diagrams from any device, share them across teams and locations and keep a single source of truth for your risk assessments. Updates happen automatically with no IT overhead.

Personal support from the people who built it. We do not route you through tiered support queues. When you contact us, you speak directly to the team that designed and maintains the software.

Industries We Serve

Bowtie Master supports risk management across industries where understanding and controlling major accident hazards is critical. Our customers include organisations in oil and gas exploration and production, aerospace operations and maintenance, marine and port operations, utilities and energy infrastructure, mining and extraction, rail and transport networks, and cyber security risk management.

Each of these sectors uses the bowtie methodology to map threats, consequences, preventive barriers and recovery measures, giving teams a shared visual language for risk that works across departments and geographies.

What is a bowtie diagram?
A bowtie diagram is a visual risk assessment tool shaped like a bowtie. The centre represents an unwanted event. The left side shows threats that could cause it and the preventive barriers in place. The right side shows potential consequences and the recovery measures to reduce their impact. It originated in the aviation industry and is now widely used across all high-hazard sectors.

We've helped our customers to better assess their risks, create bowtie diagrams with ease and store and share them with their organisation. Here's what they have to say:
