What is your job title and responsibilities?
I am a Senior Process Safety Engineer, which means that I support our clients with whatever technical / process safety work is required across the entire client journey. This can include anything from preparing proposals or tenders, participating in workshops, writing technical reports or just having a conversation about what is happening within the life of our clients that we can help with.
What does a normal workday look like for you?
Well, there hasn’t really been a normal workday to be honest! Each day is different, and usually comes with different priorities, that can also change from hour-to-hour. Such is life being in an engineering consultancy! I enjoy the varied work!
What talents or skills must someone who does your job certainly have?
I think some key aspects of my role are:
- attention to detail,
- listening to understand first,
- not being afraid to speak up about issues, and
- conveying technical insight in a positive way.
As “safety” is in my job title, my work can have a direct impact on the lives of personnel and our clients assets, so I think it’s important to be rigorous and patient, striving for quality of work, rather than quantity. Having a positive outlook really helps, as sometimes long reports and spreadsheets can be quite daunting.
What do you like most about your job?
I love to write a good proposal!
To me it represents future potential, something yet to be fulfilled. I get a bit of a buzz out of writing one, and I try and time myself to see how fast I can get one completed… Don’t worry, it goes through a comprehensive QA check!
I like the variation in my role, and the excitement of working with lots of people from many companies and industries. It’s great to be able to work with a fantastic team that has a similar outlook.
“If you had an unnecessary superpower, what would it be?”
Being able to handle any level of spice, without suffering the consequences
